Astrolabe
The Hermle skeleton quartz movement with astronomical indications features an astrolabe as its upper termination, complementing the hour and minute display. The sun, moon, and earth are moved by the clock's movement in their daily, monthly (moon around earth), and annual (earth around the sun) rotations by the gear train visible at the top, in a flow of time faithful to nature. The date and month positions are indicated as zodiac signs at the top of the display on a decorative pictorial scale on the watch's horizontal dial. The watch shows the earth's rotation around the sun once a year, as the earth rotates once on its axis every 24 hours. Simultaneously, the moon orbits the earth once every 29.5 days and rotates once on its own axis, so the different phases of the moon are visible from Earth. The Earth then passes through the 12 signs of the zodiac, the months and days, which can be read on a flat, cylindrical dial. The passage of time is represented identically, but not the geometric dimensions.
